A game changer of a QRP radio. Where you can survive, this will too!
Review by
Just got the radio a couple of days ago. I was most pleased unpacking it and placing it on my shack desk. Plugging in power, phone mic and an antenna and the signals came in straight away - clean & clear.
This is a pro kit for anywhere. It is light, strong and built for rough environments. The design has managed to cram in an impressive amount of functions without generating too much confusion for the operator. Still, one should read the manual pretty carefully once or twice to appreciate all the niceties that comes with it.

Also, I really like the digital technology it is based on. It provides a lot more tweaking opportunities.

My observations are that the acrylic cover of the display is pretty thick but with poor luck, it could crack so pay attention. Keep it far away from Acetone! It will ruin it. The IO ports are convincingly sturdy but have no caps. This is a shame as they would provide additional protection. There are no internal speaker in the radio as one would expect with the high IP rating. The mic has a good speaker but with all the Bluetooth headsets and speakers availble, I wish they put in a coms chip for such wireless externals.

The price is a bit high. We all know there are other rigs in the same QRP market with even higher price point but I still believe a more consumer friendly price level would make this available for far more hams with shallower pockets who would no doubt enjoy a DXpedition to their surrounding area. One should consider if the added sale would yield a stronger bottom line.

Still, in my case, I am very pleased I got this, the value is good and I am really looking forward to many pleasant QSO's on the SOTA QTH's in the area and beyond.

What a wee beast
Review by
What a cracking wee piece of QRP kit. Very simple and intuitive to operate with a cracking scope. I've grown in amateur radio with the G-90 and IC-7300 so have adapted to use vision as well as hearing to tune a signal. Initial signal reports are very good with excellent transmitted audio quality. LAB599 have really took their time to develop a cracker of an SDR unit that really feels like it IS a field portable.

Some people do not like the idea of a scope, they think it makes ops lazy. I am a self confessed addict to the scope and it makes hunting weaker stations so much easier and no HF radio should be without one.

Do not let the lack of battery or internal tuner fool you, most FT-817/818 users I have spoken to do not even use the internal due to the 2-2.5w output from the internal. even the IC-705 is only 5w on the internal so an external power source is needed anyway... and they both have no internal ATU. This IS one serious field QRP radio that is a serious contender to the 817/818 if you do not want 2m/70cm or even as a great companion radio for the ultimate filed QRP play time.
