Over the last few decades, the G5RV antenna has become one of the most popular and widely used "all around" multi-band antennas in the world. Even though it is a "compromise" antenna, it has good overall performance on most hf ham bands when used with an external tuner, and allows coax as an entry feedline to the radio equipment eliminating the need and hassle of ladder line or twin lead. It should be noted that some internal tuners just don't have enough range to "tune" it.

Great kit let down completely by one dodgy connector

After putting this up (Flexweave version), I went to connect a PL259 to the SO239. I have nonidea what was meant to be fitted, but there was no way a 259 was going in that hole.
Something was very wrong. After an hour and a half filing away at the hole, my 259 was knackered from trying to tap it in.
In the end I had to take to it with a 4mm high speed steel drill and finally, it works. It is beaten up and lets down an otherwise good product.
Can I have another black bit at the end please as it is at best a temporary repair. You can have the old one back!

A well made wire antenna

I had to replace my old G5RV which had been installed about 40 years ago! One half had snapped in the recent storms. However I only replaced half of it. My G5RV starts off in the loft and goes out opposite sides of the house one half over the drive to a convenient tree and the other half (which needed repairing) to a neighbours tree, both ends sloping inverted "V" I have quite a small garden but this has worked very well for about 40 years. It was a lot of work being in the loft so I decided to replace just the broken half and everything is fine now and I still have the other half spare in case of another problem. The rig ATU handles swr ok on 80 metres and I find on 40 that the swr is very low without the need for an ATU. I also use it on 60 metres with good results using a seperate ATU. For the higher bands I use a Cobweb mounted on the end of my garage.

I made my first G5RV over 40 years ago and used to work DXCC with 100mW. Nothing has changed since that day Louis Varney designed it in 1946.
Today I bought the half sized G5RV and found the quality to be very good and, considering the price of copper, is well priced.
The ideal aerial for the beginner or old timer.
