I've been using DMR for a few weeks with an Anytone 878.
I purchased the Icom because I wanted to experience D-Star but also wanted a better experience with analogue too.
The Anytone suffers from self generated interference from the screen when using analogue, the Icom gives perfect clean audio.
Also I've noticed that D-Star audio levels are much more consistent than DMR, no more frantic volume adjustments required.
The major positives for me are: the very clear and large display, audio quality, fast GPS, near repeater list and dual VFO's.

You definitely get what you pay for...

Coming back into D-Star after a 7 year break. Wanted something i could use away from the car and around the house. Did research on whats new after all these years and found the ID-52e. Amazing radio. Quality as with everything ICOM makes. Very easy to program and use, i love it interacts with my IPhone, which makes D-Star even easier to use. Yes its a bit pricey, but you have to pay for quality. Amazed on the power. Example; i was sat in an upstairs office, radio on in the background, heard voices on the radio, and i found i could hear and open the repeater at Dover from my QTH Herne Bay.
If your after a portable wether for analog or D-Star you wont go far wrong with the ICOM ID-52e

ID52 is a great ICOM product and has loads of features. If you want portable D-STAR its a must-have. The charger failed on mine after about 20 minutes, but ICOM are going to replace it with no hassle. Pricey, yes, but you get a lot for your money

The Icom ID52 is a stunning radio.
Apart from the ease of use with the best menu system I've used and ease of access to the D-Star system, the quality of build is superb. Audio is better by a long way than the FT5. All in all very happy and enjoying using the radio.. 73

Wow, this was my first impression. This is a lovely unit packed with some amazing features and little tweaks that are made simple by the menus system. I am only 2 years into this hobby and seem to have gone for the I-com range for the car now as well as QRP. This a good weighted handheld which feels lovely to hold and sports a superb bright lcd display. I am impressed with the battery and love how it’s changeable with the 705 too. I have not had anything to compare this too but have used the ID-51, the 52 is by far the better for me. I have managed the software and now have the radio fully programmed for repeaters and also d-star via RF and HotSpot with ease.
As this is the only handheld and my first I think it’s good value for money for what it has packed into it. I love it and have also recommended it to two others who have already purchased one too.

Early days, quite a learning curve but done a few DSTAR nets using Doozy software so far. Battery life much better than I had been led to believe.

I changed from the ID51E Plus to this, has some great additions like Bluetooth and ability to use dstar via an app on your phone (you still need a cable to connect). Improved transmit and receive. Radio is larger so may not fit small hands comfortably and weight is heavy.
Screen is colour seems bright enough to me and no sun glare.
Controls are very familiar with the ID51 range, but still easy to use and get you head around settings etc.
Only downside I have found and is obvious is the price, it is a lot for a HT but after getting one and using it I would say it is worth it.
