Although sold as a mobile aerial it makes a reasonable stealth installation at a home location. Being voltage fed means that it will still be reasonably effective with a poorer ground plane. The ground plane will affect the radiation angle. Once the whip is trimmed the return loss is about 20dB. The open step up transformer (coil at the bottom) can be corroded by the weather. I painted mine and it is perfect after a year in service. As air is the dielectric this aerial can be fed with a much higher power than a white stick. It handles 400w with no issues.

have purchased a decent neat hustler usa made mag mount with 3/8ths fitting for mobile work
wanted an open coil 5/8 wave antenna with 3/8ths fitting to match up with the USA made hustler mag simply for 2metres monoband work
had to source to mag elsewhere , but the open coil antenna from moonraker is just amazing - excellent reports on fm simplex and repeater's .

A great value mobile antenna for 2m

I picked this one up from Moonraker as they had the antenna on offer for just £10. It works well, although the VSWR is a touch higher than I would like at 1.5:1 with the antenna mounted to my triple magmount on the roof of our LWB van.
A recent test resulted in me contacting a station some 75 miles away using 5w, with good reports both ways.
It has a fairly flat VSWR across the whole 2m range (in fact, it seems to be OK from 144MHz up to 160MHz so could possibly be used for Marine comm's as well).
For £10 I am pleased with my purchase. It appears well made and has a springy section at the bottom, so you can be sure the antenna won't snap if it bumps into something while the vehicle is moving.
