the ft857d in my opinion is the best portable radio I have ever used, it's rugged with excellent build quality and has a pleasant layout.
I like using the radio at night as the illuminated buttons make navigation a breeze especially as you can choose between 32 colours for the screen.
it's a full shack in the box with HF,vhf,uhf although I only use it on hf it's nice to know you have vhf uhf if you so wish to.
A couple of points to consider are firstly purchase a good condition boxed radio with all the accessories that's been looked after and secondly these radios like the ft897 can suffer with lcd display issues especially if they have had a hard life.
