Description / Whistler TRX-1 E Digital Handheld Scanner

Introducing the Whistler TRX-1 digital handheld scanner, your go-to for seamless monitoring across diverse radio systems.

Moonraker have worked with Whistler to customise a UK band plan for the scanners! This ensures the radios cover UK bands in the correct steps and the correct mode. When a user does a service scan it will search in the correct steps for the selected band ensuring maximum received stations.

The radios will receive both amateur and commercial DMR transmissions as apart from the frequency they are fundamentally the same mode. The radio is supplied with software and users can select mode when writing memories or select auto and it will work out the mode itself!

This multi-system adaptive digital trunking scanner supports Motorola P25 Phase I, X2-TDMA, Phase II and DMR making it capable of monitoring the following unencrypted channels/systems:

  • Conventional DMR (Entered as a DMR trunked system)
  • Hytera XPT
  • MotoTRBO™ Capacity Plus
  • MotoTRBO™ Connect Plus
  • MotoTRBO™ Linked Cap Plus systems
  • NXDN & DMR out of the box

Whether you're a radio enthusiast or professional needing multi-system access, the Whistler Scanner TRX-1 is your versatile companion. Discover the freedom of untethered channel monitoring wherever your interests or job takes you.

Very good piece of kit, at a good price

Ok, so it costs a fair bit, but after you have go to grips with the software, you have an amazingly versatile and flexible scanner. Brilliant on the airband frequencies and picking out some distant signals from lower down. You'll either love or hate the looks - it's different from most other scanners, but seems to last a good while on rechargable batteries (not included!) and being able to recharge from a USB leads is very handy!

Feels very well made
Review by
Scanner has a very good solid feel to it. Rubber case is very difficult to remove so I purchased the leather case as well. Instruction manual could be better. I suggest that you copy the contents of the SD card to your PC before you do anything else. Programming via the PC app is my preferred option. Firstly download the data from the scanner to the PC, by using the PC app. Make changes via the PC app. Then, using the PC app, copy the data back to the scanner. You can then make changes on the fly by using the scanner. If you goof up you can use the PC app to restore the data from the PC.
The recording feature on the scanner is very useful.

Whistler TRX-1E

The scanner is a beautiful piece of equipment. Sturdily built. The rubber case is difficult to remove. I have decided not to use it, but I have purchased the optional soft case. I use rechargeable batteries. The scanner recharging takes an age, so using the rubber case was not ideal, if the batteries are removed for external charging.
That said, it is also difficult to program! If it wasn't supplied with a SD card already set up, I suspect, for an average person, (me) it would be extremely difficult to use. I also purchased an extra SD card, in case I inadvertantly wiped the supplied card, which, having looked at the software supplied by Whistler is easy to do! I also have some "play" SD cards that are purely for the learning curve of programming this device.
I have used an analogue scanner for many years, but this device is very different in the way it is updated. That won't happen to mine until I am happy with what I need to do.
On receipt and unboxing, I saw a blue pull-off tag on the top right of the scanner front. I pulled off this small tag. I couldn't see it's use. It is however part of the screen protector which has to be removed as any use of the scanner leaves scratches and marks. I didn't see the screen protector left behind and Moonraker Radio were very helpful in sorting this problem.
I have found that the spare SD card has proved more successful in locating active channels, than the installed SD card.
So, at the moment, I'm at the start of learning how to use this scanner to its full effect. It will be a steep learning curve! To say it's E-Z is really not the case! The instruction manual is of limited use. No doubt I will lose more hair until I master the programming!
I am pleased with my purchase. Over time I will appreciate its abilities more, as I learn how to use it properly. Thank goodness for on-line help and videos!

A great scanner
Review by
This is a very versatile scanner but as others have said the programming can be challenging until you get your head around it. Lots of features. The actual unit is built like a brick and feels well made and rugged (especially with the rubber bumper/case, which just takes a little getting used to when you have to remove it). The Whistler manual is a little light on detail but with the aid of a manual called the easy read version, just search online, Facebook groups and YouTube, the whole thing becomes manageable. Just remember that this needs some effort to get to grips with it but is well worth the effort.

a great hand held digital scanner, search settings all work well. is very good on battery life and very sensitive, not the easiest to program but when you grasp it, it all makes sense. a bit bulky but will fit in a coat pocket and very hard wearing, if output for decoding

Great bit of kit
Review by
Unlike many other scanners, this one is a fair bit more technical however it's to he expected due to what its capable of, which is a lot more than many other scanners. There are forums, FB Groups and YouTube videos to assist new users. And a good case to protect it from damage.
