Customer Reviews
The FT5D is a nice size, fits my hand well. Plenty of memories and good general receive coverage.
A little disappointed with not being able to select AM on UHF, and there are some very annoying signals spread through the non-amateur bands that come from inside the radio itself. The CPU clock shift feature doesn't help, sadly.
Yes, having a repeater database like the ID52 that you could use with GPS is a nice touch, but repeater book is just as easy.
I programmed in the repeaters with a 50 mile radius of my QTH, so when I do go out, I can quickly store those around me into the PMG group and monitor them.
I first bought the FT70D as my entry into Yeasu and loved it. The 5D is a joy, and just as easy to use, despite the lack of keys.
The supplied antenna is ok, but as usual I put my Retevis 771 antenna on, which has a better SWR and works well with the radio's sensitive receiver.
The fast charge base is a must, else you will be waiting ages for it to charge.
I love being able to have two bands on the screen that are both monitored, or you also have PMG to monitor 5, or CAM to monitor groups.
All in all I love this radio, it is built well, is a great price, easy to use, and a joy to hold.
The radio has built-in GPS, and nearly a 1000 memories to fill up with repeaters etc. BUT, the memories cannot store the GPS location of the repeater. Hence, you cannot exploit the GPS to access the nearest repeater to your current location.
This has been standard feature on Icom radios for years. WHY is Yaesu so backward?
Another annoyance is the insistence of using a custom power supply instead of going for a USB-C socket that combines power and data. The consequence is that the battery takes over 8h to fully charge.
