Replacement for my FTM-400

Purchased this on a whim to allow me to move my FTM-400 to my car from the shack. The 500 is an excellent replacement for the 400 in the shack. However I wouldn't want to use it mobile as the screen is a little too small and I just prefer the way the 400 works and the fact I can just have the larger screen on the dash with the rest of the radio tucked out of sight.

So far so good. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and still programming. Much better than the FTM-200DE and Japanese, not made in China, so much better quality. Thank you Moonraker for sorting things out.

Perfect for the shack

As an owner of the FTM-400 that I use in my car I was looking for something similar for the shack and the FTM-500 meets my needs.
Is it better than my FTM-400? Well yes and no. The screen is smaller and some of the sub menus and controls are more ‘hidden’ than on the FTM-400. However, as I wasn’t going to use the radio in the car. It perfectly useable in the shack.
I haven’t set up the APRS as the radio will not be going mobile. That said it’s looks identical to the set up on the FTM-400 so I would expect it to be as good in operation.
On the whole I feel a lot of thought has gone into making the 500 as usable and as good if not better in some respects than the 400.
Build quality is every bit as good as every other Yaesu radio I have ever owned (I currently have four) and planning on a fifth and possibly a sixth! Okay, I admit it, I’m a fan.

I read the review in practical wireless and with recently selling my base radio I thought I’d treat myself to a ftm-500d. I’m so pleased with it, the display is bright and responsive, quality received audio and great sensitivity reciever, highly recommendable especially while yaesu cashback offer is on ????

The perfect mobile radio.

I bought this radio for the car but it's not left the shack. It's too much fun. It's well made and feels quality. It's not cheep mind but the cash back offer at the time helped.
The staff at Moonraker were as helpful as they always are and a pleasure to deal with.
The radio comes empty and I would have liked a Moonraker special code plug in it. But I paid £20 for the RT systems programming software and have been building my own repeater list with that.
The menu on the radio is more intuitive than I remember from Yaesu and an improvement on their older models. Still takes a bit of getting used to but it's fun to explore and customise. It came with a power lead, mic and main bracket but I was disappointed to not get a bracket for the head as that is how I imagine most users will be fitting it. I thought that was a bit tight of Yaesu to leave that out of the box along with a longer connection cable for the screen.
That said I have managed to pick up a 3d printed mount for £6 and a 1m head connection lead for £2.50.
I've also made an extra power lead for the car £3.50 for the plug. Looking forward to being able to swap between the car and the shack.
On the whole, great radio with great audio (as others have told me) and APRS is fun on the move.

I didn’t think I needed an FTM-500 (as I really like my 100) until last week at the RSGB Convention where Yaesu had the whole range on display.
It is much nicer in real life than you can tell from pictures.
Anyway, I bought one and even after just a week of using it - it really is a nice product.
It doesn’t do a lot more than my old 100, but it does everything with much more style.
Particularly like the customisable quick menu, where you can put your most used functions.
Also very sensitive on RX , scanning brings in more repeaters than other kit.
If anyone was in 2 minds about getting one , I would say you will be impressed especially while there is an offer on.
It is much nicer in real life than you can tell from pictures.

Bought to cover FM,Fusion and Airband. It seems to cover all with sensitive receive and clear good audio. If SSB had been included it would be a world beater.As with all new rigs menu driven but the important vol,sgl, band selection accessed easily from controls on the front.Touch screen actually works better than I thought it would taking its screen size into account.
