What's in the Box?

The Wideband Desktop Antenna comes with almost everything you will need right out of the box. Specifically, this includes:

  • The desktop antenna
  • 4 metres of RG58 coax cable
  • 125 mm magnetic plate base
  • BNC male plug

Assembly is relatively simple. The Desktop Antenna screws into the magnetic base with ease. Similarly, the top section attaches via a single bolt. From there, you can screw in the main elements in a matter of minutes. 

Once assembled, the Desktop Antenna feels solid and well-made. There is no shifting of parts, and it doesn't feel insecure. 

The magnetic base design allows it to attach to your vehicle when stationary. It is heavy-duty and certainly feels durable. However, we would not recommend using it while your vehicle is in motion. 

Because the plug is BNC, you may need an adaptor if you want to use this antenna with a Software Defined Radio (SDR). 

Wideband Desktop Discone Antenna Review: Our Initial Impression

Our first thought when assembling this Desktop Discone Antenna was related to its durability. Not only is it easy to set up, but the material and construction feel like they will last a long time. The durability is always a relief with any new purchase, as you don't want to have to replace it a few months down the line. 

Its durability is especially impressive due to its size. Though it covers an impressive range of radio bands, you wouldn't know that just by looking at it. The stem itself has a height of 70 cm, meaning it can easily fit just about anywhere and truly lives up to its desktop description.

When we tested the coverage, we did so both inside and outside. This gave us a good insight into how effectively the antenna can pick up radio frequency. 

However, remember that the efficiency of an antenna depends on its location. An abundance of buildings or trees can disrupt radio frequency, in addition to your position above sea level. 

Throughout our tests, we managed to pick up multiple radio signals on a variety of frequencies. However, it was undeniable that the Scanner Antenna was more effective on all frequencies when used outdoors.

The higher efficiency outdoors is likely due to electrical interference from other devices interfering with the radio frequency. We recommend moving the antenna away from other electronics to reduce interference, preferably outside at an elevated position. 

When we tested coverage outside, we found we could pick up far stronger signals on various frequencies. This included radio broadcasts up to thirty miles away, which is impressive for such a compact antenna. We also tested it at 1090 MHz bands and managed to pick up radio signals from aircraft. All in all, this device is a hit. 

What to Use the Wideband Desktop Discone Antenna For?

Discone aerials are most often desirable for picking up omnidirectional, wide bands, essentially meaning they can pick up a radio signal from any direction. They are generally suitable for MHz bands higher than 30, but this can vary depending on the size of the aerial. Discone Antennas are also sometimes what people refer to as scanner aerial, as scanning is their primary function.

By ‘scanning’ for nearby radio signals, discone aerials can receive frequencies of 25 MHz to 2000 MHz. Their efficiency depends on their location and the specific device used, which is why it is so important to do your homework before purchasing one.

Discone Antennas are primarily for receiving signals rather than transmitting. This is because, despite their impressive bandwidth, they are not optimised for a specific frequency band.
