How To Renew a Ham Radio Licence? A Quick & Easy Guide

If you’re part of the ham radio community, you may know all about the licence you need to get in order to get started. It’s an integral part of the hobby that lets you get the whole experience - as an amateur or years-long hobbyist. But did you know that when your license ends, you need to renew it?

Make sure you keep ahead of the game and know exactly what you need to do to renew. Curious? We’ve got all the details here.

What Documents Do You Need To Review Your Ham Radio License?

There are a couple of scenarios to cover regarding ensuring your licence is up-to-date and validated. The first is for those of you proactive types who are aware that your licence is ending. The second is for those enjoying your ham radio licence so much that you've forgotten to renew it. Whoops! Don't worry; we'll cover both situations.

The first type is simple: you must revalidate your licence every five years - although we recommend doing so yearly if you can. To revalidate, all you need to do is register with the Ofcom Online Licensing System. Once complete, your next step involves logging in and updating your details. Luckily, no other documentation is needed.

The second type is a little more involved but still doable. If you've left it too late to revalidate, you'll need to reinstate your lapsed licence. To do this, you're required to complete a form and post it to Ofcom along with proof that:

  • you're entitled to hold a licence, and
  • that you used to hold the callsign in your name

Proof can be any of the following:

  • a copy of your old licence of validation documentation
  • a copy of your City and Guilds Institute certificate
  • a copy of your entry in one of the RSGB books (if applicable)
